For the 2025–2026 NBA season, LeBron James has formally activated his $52.6 million player option to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers.
As rumors about the 40-year-old’s long-term ambitions and probable retirement rage, his decision guarantees that he will remain at the top of the sport, at least for another year.
Many had been expecting this move. James was unlikely to refuse the player option because it represented one of the highest single-season salaries in NBA history.
Additionally, LeBron’s decision delays any free agency decisions until the summer of 2026, when he will be 41 and may be considering the end of an extraordinary career.
Rich Paul talks about LeBron James’s Lakers retirement
Rich Paul, the CEO of Klutch Sports and LeBron’s agent, underlined the Lakers and James’ shared commitment in spite of these obstacles.
Paul stated, “LeBron wants to compete for a championship,”
“He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all.
“We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”

James joined the team in 2018 and has been a key player during the Lakers’ transitional seasons, helping them win an NBA title in 2020.
With James still at the center, the recent appointment of James’s longtime pal JJ Redick as head coach represents yet another effort to create a winning culture. A personal milestone was added to what might be his last stretch in the league when the Lakers also selected his son, Bronny James.
Given that James’ longevity and performance are already approaching unprecedented levels, a return after 2026 would probably result in a large pay cut.
