Teams risk disintegrating after a string of defeats like the Lakers have suffered over the past week. Together with a crushing loss to the Timberwolves on Monday, Wednesday’s loss was historically poor in and of itself, making it the worst back-to-back loss in the team’s history.
As the Lakers have seen last season, things can easily get out of control. Following the In-Season Tournament, a string of subpar outcomes caused chaos and proved expensive at the end of the season. When talking after the Heat’s thumping victory, head coach JJ Redick appeared to be well aware of all of it.
JJ Redick talks about bringing everyone together
He also saw the potential for division in the group when he talked about the need for players to take responsibility for their mistakes. In this particular situation, Redick’s NBA playing experience is crucial, even if he is a new head coach. He understands how to handle situations that can go wrong in a locker room.
In response to the question of how to prevent the squad from disintegrating, Redick stated that he intends to meet with both coaches and players.
He stated: “There has to be some ownership,”. “I think when a group is not performing well, which happens…you can splinter and it’s easy to not want the ownership. Particularly when it’s embarrassing.” “Something I’ll talk about with my staff, certainly talk with the group, certainly talk individual guys,”. “We have good guys and we have guys that want to win and guys that want to play the right way. Figuring out how to do that together, I think that’s the challenge for almost any team. When you can do it – and we’ve done it, we’ve shown we can do it – you just want to get back to that and we will.”
This is another benefit of having a head coach who is an effective communicator. Redick has done a fantastic job of explaining to players their duties throughout the season, as evidenced by the way he benched D’Angelo Russell with ease.
