Jim Harbaugh Will Undergo Hip Replacement and Heart Ablation

Jim Harbaugh, the coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, said on Wednesday that he will undergo hip replacement surgery and cardiac ablation this summer.

The 61-year-old Harbaugh left the Chargers‘ Week 6 game against the Denver Broncos for a short while due to a flare-up of atrial flutter, an arrhythmia that causes the heart to beat too quickly. Throughout the season, Harbaugh wore a cardiac monitor for two weeks.

Paramedics attended to Harbaugh in the locker room. After undergoing an ECG scan, they were able to restore his heart’s regular beat. After his comeback in the first quarter, Harbaugh continued to coach the rest of the game.

While Harbaugh was away, interim head coach Jesse Minter served as defensive coordinator.

Jim Harbaugh’s medical history in NFL

Harbaugh had his final outburst in 2012. He experienced an abnormal heartbeat while coaching the San Francisco 49ers against the Chicago Bears on “Monday Night Football,” but he managed to finish the game and consult with medical professionals afterward.

The surgery will fix Harbaugh’s hip replacement, which currently causes him to walk with a noticeable limp.

Harbaugh has previously stated that his health concerns would prevent him from considering retirement.

As stated by Harbaugh in October: “It would take my heart stopping for me not to be out there on the sideline,”
