James Turrell ‘Skyspace’ With Pantheon-Like Dome To Open Next Year In Denmark

Debuting June 19, 2026, a massive permanent installation by world-renowned artist James Turrell will be unveiled in Denmark’s ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, featuring a dome with a diameter nearly as large as the one at Rome’s iconic Pantheon.

The name of Turrell’s epic, large-scale forthcoming work is “As Seen Below – The Dome.” The 82-year-old artist’s upcoming “Skyspace” will be his largest yet for public viewing. According to information provided by the museum, the new Skyspace’s dome will be over 50 feet high and 130 feet in diameter. Its diameter has been likened to that of the Pantheon in Rome, Italy, which measures just over 140 feet.

Visitors to the ARoS exhibit will be able to sit inside the Skyspace, beneath the dome, and experience how the light, shadows, and colors change over time. During sunrise and sunset, the Skyspace will host “timed light sessions” aligned with “the rhythm of nature and the changing seasons.” The museum teases it as a reflective experience where visitors can connect with nature in a unique way.

“You arrive via a subterranean, light-filled corridor before stepping into a large domed hall, where Turrell’s precisely calibrated light bathes the space in color and makes the opening to the sky appear both boundless and close,” says ARoS of the forthcoming exhibit. Notably, the museum has had Turrell’s 2002 light installation, “Milkrun III,” in its collection since 2004.

What Else Is There To Know About The James Turrell Skyspace Coming To Denmark’s ARoS Aarhus Art Museum?

‘Turrell has been creating “Skyspace” installations since the ’70s. Blending art, architecture, and nature, the rooms feature apertures at the top framing the sky. Artnet notes that there are around 90 of the unique works of art around the globe.

Rebecca Matthews, Museum Director at ARoS, stated, “We are proud that our museum will be home to James Turrell’s most significant Skyspace to date — an extraordinary work that invites visitors to slow down, lift their gaze and experience light, time and space in deeply moving ways. This is not only a remarkable artwork for ARoS, but also a new cultural landmark for Aarhus.”

“With ‘As Seen Below,’ I am shaping the very experience of seeing rather than simply delivering an image. The architecture brings the sky close, so you recognize that the act of looking is the work itself,” noted Turrell.
