The Charlotte Hornets have issued an apology after facing criticism for a skit that took place during a game against the Philadelphia 76ers. The skit involved a child being “given” a PlayStation 5, only to have it taken away off-camera and replaced with a jersey.

The Hornets acknowledged that the skit “missed the mark” and promised to make things right. In a statement, they announced that the child would indeed receive the PS5, along with a VIP experience at a future game.

This is the full statement;

“During last night’s game there was an on-court skit that missed the mark. The skit included bad decision making and poor communication. Simply put, we turned the ball over and we apologize. We have reached out to the family and are committed to not only making it right but to exceeding expectations. We will be providing the fan with the PS5 that he should have taken home last night along with a VIP experience to a future game. Our goal is and will remain to elevate the guest experience for every person that enters Spectrum Center, and to show our fans how much we appreciate their relentless support.”

It all started when a child was brought onto the court with the team’s mascot, Hugo, dressed as Santa Claus. After reading a letter to Santa requesting a PS5, a cheerleader came out with a bag containing the console and handed it over to the kid.

However, after the cameras turned off, a Hornets staff member took the PS5 away from the child and replaced it with a jersey, much to the confusion of the cheerleader and other people present. The child’s uncle was reportedly informed that the gift would be taken away, but the child himself was not.

It is good the team has now taken responsibility for their actions and is working to rectify the situation. In the meantime, Charlotte Hornets have apologized for gifting a child a PS5 during a skit and then taking it back off camera and have promised to give the child the console, as well as a VIP experience at a future game, in an effort to make amends.
