Voters went into the polls and gave a big middle finger to fascism on Tuesday, and what seemed to be a small ripple turned into a huge tsunami that crashed through red states, flipping seats, electing Black women, and sending a message that enough is enough.

Democrats have secured 51 seats in the Senate, giving them the majority in the chamber.

NBC News projects that the Democrats will have full control of Congress.

From NBC:

Democrats have captured full control of Congress, NBC News projects, with voters delivering a forceful repudiation of Trump’s agenda, coupled with a clear-cut message that Congress has not done enough to provide checks on his administration and needs to do more to address affordability and corruption.

Democrats’ victory in the Senate comes after a swift and decisive win in the House, where Democrats are set to have what could be their largest majority in nearly two decades.

Democrats flipped six Republican-held seats in Maine, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas. Some of those states Democrats had long dreamed of turning blue, and others were barely even on their radar a year ago as possibilities.

In South Carolina, nepo-Senator Darline Graham is trailing behind Democrat Annie Andrews, who is expected to win the Senate seat vacated by Lindsay Graham after his death.

NBC notes that South Carolina was an early warning sign that things weren’t going to go well for the GOP, as it is “a state even many Democrats thought was out of reach.”

“Democrats made incursions deep into the heart of MAGA country, with gains far beyond what they were able to achieve in the 2018 midterm elections during Trump’s first term,” NBC notes.

James Talarico beat out Ken Paxton to win the U.S. Senate seat in Texas; Josh Turek is expected to flip a Senate seat in Iowa; Adam Hamilton is projected to flip a Senate seat in Kansas, and Susan Collins of Maine is said to be on her way out the door as Democrat Troy Jackson leads in their Senate race.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has conceded to Democrat Gina Hinojosa, who will become the first Mexican woman to be governor in the United States.

Ohio Democrat Sherrod Brown will return to the Senate after beating Trump favorite Jon Husted. Amy Acton will now be Ohio governor.

Xavier Becerra will be California’s first Latino governor.

Other notable wins include former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who became the first Black woman elected governor in the country. Stacey Plaskett is the newly elected governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and as a Black woman, she is also celebrating being first.

David Crowley will be the first Black governor of the state of Wisconsin.

More from NBC:

Forty-three percent of midterm voters surveyed in the NBC News Exit Poll said one of the reasons they voted the way they did was to express opposition to Trump, whose job approval rating is lower than that of any president on Election Day in nearly two decades.

Seventy-one percent of voters — including 41% of Republicans — also said there is not enough congressional oversight of Trump. Corruption, affordability, immigration and the war in Iran were all key issues, as well.

As I said, voters turned out to say, “Fuck fascism.”

Predictably, Donald Trump is in his feelings about the election results.

NBC reports “the results were so bleak that Trump quickly ran away from them Tuesday evening. Trump said on social media that, in fact, he was not on the ballot, and that’s why Republicans lost: ‘I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!’”

This is a moment that should change everything for this country.

A Congress that is not in the back pocket of the president is a Congress that should be unafraid to hold him accountable for the things he has done.

A Congress that is not in the back pocket of the president is a Congress that can set us on the right path in the 2028 presidential election.

A Congress that is not in the back pocket of the president is a Congress that should not repeat his racist, xenophobic propaganda and one that will do more than ply us with social media platitudes and empty hand wringing.

We have had enough, and if the election results are any indication, we are all ready for some big changes to happen in this country.

Let’s hope things continue moving in the right direction.
