For the most part, Syracuse Orange football’s inaugural season under head coach Fran Brown has gone well. However, Brown disclosed his somewhat unconventional post-loss ritual during a press conference on Monday, indicating that he takes the losses more seriously than any coach in the nation.
With former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord leading the Orange, Brown and the team were viewed as a dark horse in the ACC going into the season. But after losing two of their previous three ACC games, they might not have a chance to contend for a conference title.
After the team’s Week 11 loss to Boston College, Brown spoke to reporters on Monday, stating that he hadn’t had a shower until Monday morning because he feels he “doesn’t deserve the soap” following a defeat.
Fran Brown explains how he “doesn’t deserve to shower” after a loss
Through Ashley Wenskoski of CNY Central, an NBC and The CW station in Syracuse, New York, Brown stated: “Honestly, I’ve got like a ritual when we lose,”
“I didn’t even get into the shower until earlier this morning. I just be mad, brush my teeth. It’s like, ‘I don’t deserve soap. I don’t deserve to do all that.’ I’m just focused on trying to get back and try to make sure that our players mentally understand that I let them down. They didn’t do it. I just wake up all night. Especially when we lose. I wake up like damn, that really happened that way. And then I just move on.”
“There is a process I follow every week. Win, lose, or draw. The only thing is my wife, I can’t sleep in the bed if we lose, because I’m not going to get in the shower for that day. I’m just mad. I just sit there and brush my teeth. That’s what I feel I have to do so y’all won’t say my breath stinks. But I’m just kind of locked in on certain things in certain ways. You gotta earn the right to do certain things. So winners get washed and losers just have to wait a little bit.”

On the one hand, Brown’s enthusiasm for Syracuse football’s success is admirable. And for Syracuse supporters, it should be a resounding indication that he is the right person for the job. However, Brown is likely even more unpleasant to be around as a result of this than he would be the day following defeats.
There haven’t been many days where Brown has been both upset and unwashed, fortunately for him and his spouse, as Syracuse has only dropped three games this season.
