Dwyane Wade owns a portion of the Chicago Sky, his hometown WNBA franchise. Although, in principle, he should oppose Unrivaled’s success because it is a WNBA competitor league, he views the advancements made by a player-run league as a valuable adoption of improved conditions.
Wade is aware that the issue is money. Through TV arrangements and other investors, Unrivaled was able to earn more than $150 million for the budget. The WNBA, on the other hand, has a hard wage cap of only roughly $1.5 million per team, which means that the league as a whole may spend about $18 million.
Wade praised the Unrivaled league on his podcast for establishing a standard that the WNBA now has to meet, if not exceed.
“Because I’m on the WNBA side … there’s a lot of things that goes into where the money goes … But, it is a conversation now. Not to talk about the W, but to talk about Unrivaled and what they built…” . “It’s just incredible that you don’t have to travel for the season in the summer, your family doesn’t have to not see you play … everything you need is right there.”
Wade spent a lot of time discussing the travel element that Unrivaled was able to avoid. Due to the little pay the W offers and the enormous costs associated with becoming a professional athlete, even well-known players were compelled to play overseas in previous WNBA cycles.
Unrivaled’s ability to remain domestic was a major factor in their ability to attract such talent. Wade stated that Unrivaled is creating something unique in large part because they prioritize players, whereas the WNBA is more concerned with profits and statistics.
