From diehard Country enthusiasts to radio stations, award shows, fellow celebrities like Courtney Love and John Schneider, and more, Beyonce‘s history-making album ‘Cowboy Carter‘ has received its fair share of headline-grabbing jeers.
This, despite being one of the year’s most acclaimed among general critics.
The latest to nab headlines for weighing in on the multi-GRAMMY-nominated project is rising Country star Christopher Anthony Lunsford (known professionally as Oliver Anthony).
Taking to YouTube earlier this week via a reflective video called ‘What I’ve Learned in the Music Industry So Far…,’ Anthony slams the music business in a profanity-laden rant.
“I don’t need a bunch of nerds and coffee-drinkin’ freaks in Nashville to tell me how to live my life. I guess that was my mistake for relying on those people, instead of relying on God and the people I trust,” he said while venting during a drive.
Even taking a dig at his own management for trying to improve his image, Oliver claims he was urged to publicly support Beyonce’s ‘Carter’ despite not believing it was praiseworthy.
“One of the guys I worked with, he wanted me to make some stupid fucking post about Beyoncé’s country album, about how it was good, even though it was complete trash. It makes me just want to throw up,” he said before later relaying, “So I was supposed to make a post, basically trying to associate myself with Beyoncé in hopes of us doing some kind of song together, but you know, how many people do that? How many artists do you follow on social media that have never even looked at their social media, and you’re just reading words and posts and things that were written by somebody that you’ve never even met, that aren’t the artist, that don’t even necessarily work directly for the artist…”
That’s not all he said; he later weighed in on the album’s fan-favorite – a remake of Dolly Parton‘s classic ‘Jolene.’
“It’s just total cringe,” he relayed. “It represents how degenerative our society has become, that a song like a Beyoncé version of ‘Jolene’ can come out and anybody actually listen to it and think it’s not just complete f-cking trash.”
Needless to say, once Bey’s beloved fan group (the #Beyhive) swarmed once they got word of his tirade.
It’s likely the ongoing backlash will only further support his decision to exit the music industry, a claim the ‘Rich Men North of Richmond’ singer made earlier this year.
“I’m in the process of getting out of the music industry,” he said. “It’s a big joke. The plan is to eventually change my entire focus to traveling ministry work…I just have to go at it in baby steps since it’s completely DIY.”
