Four years after starting a firestorm of controversy for dropping the initial 16 charges brought against singer-actor Jussie Smollett for his role in a reported hoax hate attack (as we reported here), Chicago prosecutor Kim Foxx is earning side-eyes from critics again for a major decision in another high-profile celebrity case.
More inside.
Monday (January 30), Foxx took to press to announce she’s dropping sex-abuse charges against disgraced singer R. Kelly (born Robert Kelly) following federal convictions in two courts that should guarantee he remains locked up for decades.
Foxx previously pleaded with accusers to come forward to help her pursue charges against Kelly. Among those who answered her call were four people, three of whom were minors at the time of their alleged interaction with Robert.
Because of Kim’s motion to drop the local sex abuse charges against the GRAMMY winner in his hometown of Chicago, those accusers will not get a chance to tell their stories in court.
“Mr. Kelly is potentially looking at the possibility of never walking out of prison again for the crimes that he’s committed,” the prosecutor said, while acknowledging the news “may be disappointing.” “Today’s cases are no longer being pursued, but we believe justice has been served.”
Kelly is currently serving a 30-year prison sentencefrom a New York sex crime case and awaits sentencing on February 23 in a Chicago federal court for a separate conviction on similar charges.
At writing, reps for the ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ performer believe he is appealing both convictions.
