Canada Named Top Destination For Americans Looking To Relocate In 2026

More Americans are considering international relocation, and Canada has emerged as the clear frontrunner for those looking to make the move abroad in 2026. According to a new study by moveBuddha, an online resource for moving and storage services, nearly a quarter of Americans considering relocating abroad have their sights set on their northern neighbor.

The study revealed that 24.4 percent of respondents selected Canada as their preferred destination when contemplating a move abroad. Prospective movers cited advantages in cost of living and safety metrics. Healthcare accessibility was also a factor that makes the country particularly attractive to potential American expatriates.

Why Canada Tops The List

Canada’s appeal to Americans considering relocation stems from several practical factors. The country’s proximity to the United States eliminates many of the logistical challenges typically associated with international moves. As a predominantly English-speaking nation, Canada also offers reduced language and cultural barriers for Americans. This makes the transition smoother than relocating to countries where English is not widely spoken.

“We’ve helped thousands of people move across the country for all kinds of reasons – to chase a job, start a family, or just get closer to the beach. But what we’re seeing now is very different,” said Ryan Carrigan, moveBuddha’s Co-founder. “With rising costs, job uncertainty, and concerns about health care and safety, more people are looking for somewhere that just feels livable.”

Economic And Safety Considerations

The study, conducted in September 2025 and surveying more than 1,000 U.S. residents, identified the cost of living as the primary concern for potential expatriates. Thirty-four percent of respondents cited it as their top consideration. This was followed by financial security and political stability as other key factors influencing relocation decisions.

For Americans contemplating international moves, these concerns reflect broader anxieties about domestic conditions. The survey indicated that high living costs in the United States, concerns about healthcare access, and perceptions of crime were the main factors driving Americans to consider relocation abroad.

While Canada dominated the rankings, England secured second place with 12.2 percent of respondents expressing interest in relocating there. Japan, Ireland, and Switzerland rounded out the top five destinations, with France, Costa Rica, Mexico, New Zealand, and Thailand completing the top ten.
