Caleb Williams’ burden: Being the Bears’ quarterback, championship messiah
This season, Andscape will document the ups and downs of this Black quarterback fraternity and how each of its members is carrying their specific burden of proof.
Until the Chicago Bears made Caleb Williams their first-round pick in 2024, the franchise had never selected a quarterback in the first round.
Chicago has a history of great running backs and dominant defenses, but outside of Sid Luckman more than 75 years ago, the Bears lacked a great signal-caller. Then, Williams hit the Windy City.
Williams’ burden is proving that he can be the Bears’ quarterback messiah.
He suffered through a brutal rookie year that tested his toughness and resolve, taking 68 sacks as Chicago finished 5-12. But last season, under first-year head coach Ben Johnson, Williams blossomed. Johnson was an offensive guru, and Williams became a magic man known as “The Iceman.”
His last-minute comebacks became legendary. At age 24, Williams holds the record for comeback wins in a season by a quarterback under 25. In his first playoff game against the Green Bay Packers, Williams led Chicago to the largest postseason comeback in franchise history. His greatest comeback this season came after a severe hamstring injury, when he returned to play brilliantly.
The lingering question among Bears fans is whether Williams can lead the team to its first championship in 40 years. Williams’ burden of proof is to continue showing leadership and maturity.
With the playoffs looming, Bears fans don’t want “The Iceman” to melt under pressure.
