Set to storm theaters on March 21, 2025, the beloved story of ‘Snow White‘ – starring actress-singer Rachel Zegler – will get a 21st century update nearly 88 years after the original’s release.
For most Disney classic lovers, anticipation for the forthcoming live-action remake reached a feverish pitch this week after its official trailer dropped.
On the other hand, some racists only saw their disappointment increase as demonstrated by the flood of social media posts around Zegler’s portrayal of the titular character due to her Colombian heritage.
Much like actress-singer Halle Bailey who faced racist backlash for portraying Ariel in the 2023-released ‘Little Mermaid,’ Zegler has braved similar intolerance once news broke she’d won the role of White.
Another singer-actress who can identify with their plight is R&B icon Brandy who broke color barriers in the late 90’s with her portrayal of Cinderella.
In a recent interview with ‘Variety,’ the Vocal Bible weighed in on the controversy around Rachel’s forthcoming film.
“You’re not taking on this role to fit the mold of the critics,” Brandy shared. “You’re doing this for every little Colombian girl who has yet to see themselves in a role like a Disney princess. You’re doing this for the little girl that you once were, who grew up without that representation of her Colombian culture. You are showing her that anything is possible for someone who looks like her, and that is the most important job in the world.”
As if those encouraging words weren’t enough, B-Rocka made clear she thinks Zegler “will be absolutely incredible in this role.”
The R&B diva’s comments came just months after she garnered praise for revisiting her groundbreaking role of Cinderella in the July-released ‘Rise of Red.’
