Book Reveales How Caleb Williams Looked to Avoid Bears

According to Seth Wickersham’s latest book, “American Kings: A Biography of the Quarterback,” Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams first attempted to avoid being picked by the team and thought of taking drastic means to do so.

Wickersham claims that Williams and his father, Carl Williams, explored several options to avoid being selected by the Bears, including signing with the United Football League, avoiding the NFL draft, and figuring out a way around the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

In an attempt to go around the league’s collective bargaining agreement and allow his son to select his team, Carl Williams sought advice from Archie Manning, who assisted Eli Manning in selecting his team in 2004.

In 2024, Williams told a number of agents: “I don’t want my son playing for the Bears,”

The drama around Caleb Williams and Bears trade

Before meeting with Kevin O’Connell, the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, at the NFL Scouting Combine, Williams was unsure of his goals for the 2024 NFL draft. The two clicked immediately. Despite Williams’ decision to join the Vikings, Bears general manager Ryan Poles stated that they would select him “no matter what.”

In order to ruin a possible relationship, Wickersham disclosed that there was a chance to publicly criticize the Bears. Carl Williams was ready and willing to do just that, but Caleb Williams was worried that if the Bears wouldn’t move him, it would cause more harm.

However, during a visit with the Bears prior to the draft, Williams concluded that he might contribute to the team’s turnaround.

Despite having a terrible rookie season—he lost 10 straight games, was fired a league-high 68 times, and had three offensive coordinators and two head coaches—Williams proved he has what it takes to be the franchise quarterback this organization has been waiting for. Williams was the focus of the Bears’ offseason construction. Williams is now in a position to be successful as we enter Year 2.
