Black-Owned Getaways In Unexpected Places

It’s not always easy to find a Black-owned hotel or resort when traveling, even when you’re exploring countries where the population overwhelmingly identifies as Black or as having African descent.

In the U.S., for example, less than 2% of hotels are Black-owned, representing a small but growing area in the hospitality industry. While the global numbers remain unknown, some studies show there is a perception that Black people do not patronize luxury hotels and resorts (which is evident by a lack of representation in mainstream media and marketing), let alone own these spaces.

That’s why we created a list of Black-owned luxury stays in unexpected places.

African Bush Camps – Botswana, Zambia, And Zimbabwe

Founded by Zimbabwean guide Beks Ndlovu in 2006, African Bush Camps is one of the few Black-owned luxury safaris in the world. ABC emphasizes creating immersive and personalized itineraries without losing focus on its commitment to community and conservation.

Guests have an incredible opportunity to book a luxury tent between three countries: Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. What will make your experience stand out compared to booking with other safari companies is Ndlovu’s commitment to hiring local guides from the community, creating an authentic experience that connects you with the culture and nature of the region.

Casa Noir Cartagena – Colombia

When Harlem native Shawn Roseburg created the concept of Casa Noir, he was inspired by simply wanting to highlight Black culture and heritage in a city where nearly 50% of people identify as having African descent. Even in a city known for celebrating its Black culture, there are not many places like Casa Noir.

Located in Getsemani, Casa Noir is the first Black-owned hotel in Cartagena. This city escape places you at the heart of several main attractions, such as Museo del Oro Zenu, Marina Park, Plaza de San Diego, Clock Tower Monument, the Rafael Nunez Museum, and the Walls of Cartagena. Key amenities for guests include room service, a rooftop bar, spa and wellness services, a rooftop jacuzzi, and airport transportation.

Eclipse At Half Moon – Montego Bay, Jamaica

Luxury has never felt better than a stay at Half Moon in Montego Bay, Jamaica. There’s a reason why it’s one of Jamaica’s most sought-after resorts. Guests describe it as a biophilic sanctuary that offers both luxury and healing, brought to your front steps by nature.

Wake up each day with the waves and sparkle from the Caribbean Sea to the north and the lush hillsides to the south. There are nearly 60 luxurious and spacious accommodations, creating an intimate space. Also on site are two restaurants, three bars, a Salamander Spa, a sweeping infinity-edge swimming pool, and a private beachfront with a natural swimming cove.

The two-bedroom estate ocean suite is one of the most incredible experiences here at Eclipse at Half Moon. Guests looking for more indoor and outdoor living will enjoy this airy suite that has views of the Caribbean Sea. Each bedroom has a private patio, expansive en suite bathroom, and private outdoor showers.

Hotel Sages -Bali, Indonesia

Once you step inside Hotel Sages, you’ll quickly learn why it’s the go-to villa resort for frequent travelers to Bali. It’s a magical stay, and guests will undoubtedly sense the owner’s intentions to create a relaxing oasis in one of the world’s most stunning and transformative destinations.

Hotel Sages was born out of the pandemic. The owner’s original plan for the space was to be an artistic retreat where people could gather, create, and connect. It has evolved into something much more. With the stunning high arches, open courtyards, and serene outdoor spaces, it’s clear the artistic touches are still there. This resort in Bali’s Canggu community is a tranquil luxury that invites relaxation, intention, and mindfulness. The art involves creating your peace and luxury.

La Maison Michelle – Barbados

La Maison Michelle was uniquely designed to combine elegance and sophistication with privacy and warmth. The resort offers everything the Caribbean lifestyle has to offer: a blend of relaxed outdoor living, warm weather, warm people, and an environment that supports wellness. This resort is perfect for travelers who want to bask in the luxury that only the Caribbean can offer.

The resort sits on a hilltop that offers panoramic views of Barbados’ Platinum Coast. It’s a boutique resort with only seven villas that cover its spacious 13,000 square feet of living space. The villa’s modern interior design stands out against lush tropical gardens and beachy surroundings. In the courtyard, waterfalls cascade, creating a rainforest effect rich with greenery.

What’s great about a small boutique option is that the experience is customizable for each guest. Meals, for example, are prepared to your specific taste by a private chef for a unique and authentic Caribbean culinary experience.

Narragansett House – Martha’s Vineyard

One of the most dreamy and airy stays on Martha’s Vineyard is the Narragansett House. This whimsical gingerbread house was built in 1870. The 150-year-old Victorian home brings exciting yet charming character to Oak Bluffs.

Rooms vary in size in this island haven. There are options for solo travelers, couples, and families. Some rooms have sloping rooflines and tucked-away balconies, but all are infused with modern furniture, art, and vintage décor that celebrates a vineyard cottage chic vibe.

Spice Island Beach Resort All Inclusive – Grenada

The hardest part about experiencing resorts like Spice Island Beach Resort in Grenada is the depressing thought of leaving. This elegant resort is situated on Grenada’s breathtaking Grand Anse Beach. It’s an AAA 5 diamond-rated resort that stretches along 1,600 feet of powder white sand.

Spice Island Beach Resort is a first-class resort. The property wows guests with its 17 luxurious pool suites, stunning sunset views, and private rock gardens. A stand-out is how the staff makes each guest feel like Spice Island is their home away from home. You will be treated with the utmost care.
