Balloons Used to Smuggle Cigarettes Force Lithuanian Airport to Shut Down

Vilnius Airport, the main international gateway to Lithuania, was forced to close temporarily over the weekend due to an unusual security threat — hot air balloons carrying contraband. According to officials reported by BBC News, a series of up to 25 small hot air balloons, laden with thousands of smuggled cigarettes from neighboring Belarus, entered Lithuanian airspace on Saturday evening, October 4. This prompted authorities to halt all flight operations at the facility immediately. The airport shutdown lasted from late Saturday into early Sunday morning.

Airport Shutdown And Emergency Response

According to the National Crisis Management Center (NCMC), 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of them ending up directly over the airport. The aerial incursion affected the Vilnius area, which is close to the border with Belarus. Following the incident, Border Police successfully recovered at least 11 balloons. They also seized an estimated 18,000 packs of smuggled cigarettes from various locations throughout the region.

“Our services’ aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organizers and perpetrators so that this activity is unprofitable and does not pose a risk to civil aviation,” an NCMC spokesman told the BBC.

Ongoing Smuggling Trends In Lithuania

This incident, while disruptive, represents just one example of a widespread smuggling technique utilized along the Belarus border. Lithuanian authorities have documented that smugglers frequently deploy these rudimentary aircraft because they offer a cost-effective alternative to drones for transporting cigarettes across the border. According to the NCMC spokesman in statements to the BBC, “Meteorological balloons are a rudimentary tool used by smugglers — they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus.”

Official data illustrates the scale of this phenomenon. Thus far in 2025, Lithuanian authorities have intercepted 544 hot air balloons entering from Belarus. This figure marks a notable decrease from the 966 balloons intercepted during the previous year. The practice extends beyond Lithuania’s borders, affecting neighboring countries as well.

The airport reported that the shutdown resulted in 30 flight cancellations, affecting approximately 6,000 passengers. It warned that there may still be delays on Monday.
