Medrick Burnett Jr.’s family issues statement

On the first day of the announcement, Dr. Paul A. Bryant, athletic director, described Burnett as a “remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership, and compassion left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.”

In the late-October game between Alabama A&M and Alabama State, Burnett, who transferred from Grambling State, sustained a serious head injury in a collision.

Dominece James, Burnett’s sister, started a GoFundMe for her younger brother at the time, claiming that Medrick, who had just turned 20, had multiple brain bleeds and edema.

James stated: “He had to have a tube to drain to relieve the pressure, and after 2 days of severe pressure, we had to opt for a craniotomy, which was the last resort to help try to save his life,”

As of Wednesday, $27,000 has been raised, with former Grambling State football coach Hue Jackson contributing $1,000.

Prior to the terrible event, Burnett Jr., a native of California, played in seven games this season.
