After Matthew Stafford rejection, the Raiders Identify 3 QB Prospects

Matthew Stafford decided to accept a pay cut and re-sign with the Los Angeles Rams on Friday, dealing a blow to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Stafford’s future in Los Angeles was uncertain, thus the Raiders were among the teams interested in him. In order to get Stafford away from the Rams, who were unwilling to match such offers, the Raiders and the New York Giants were reportedly negotiating a two-year contract worth between $90 and $100 million.

Stafford, however, met with the Rams on Friday and reached an agreement on a reworked contract that has not yet been made public. Although Stafford was a primary target for the Raiders, Las Vegas will now focus on other players.

3 potential replacements for Matthew Stafford

ESPN reports that the Raiders will now consider Sam Darnold, Justin Fields, and Russell Wilson as possible candidates. Prior to an agreement being struck in Los Angeles, Stafford spoke with minority owner Tom Brady, who has been working with new head coach Pete Carroll to find a new quarterback.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ owner and president, Art Rooney II, has stated that it is “unlikely” that both Wilson and Fields will sign new contracts. Wilson is ten years older than Fields, so it was thought that the Steelers would release the veteran due to age.

Wilson has expressed to the NFL that he would like to return in 2025, but NFL insider Adam Schefter disagrees.

Head coach Mike Tomlin selected Wilson as the starting quarterback, but Fields started the first six games of the season, finishing 4-2 before being replaced due to an offseason injury.

Schefter posed the query on the ‘Pardon Our Take‘ podcast: “Steelers’ next quarterback?”  “Russell Wilson or Justin Fields. One of them will be back, [the] one of them I expect to be back, Russell Wilson.”

Fields and Darnold are the Raiders’ top priorities if Wilson returns. Although Fields is only 25, he has three years of starting quarterback experience from his stint with the Chicago Bears, who selected him 11th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.
