Law enforcement is sounding off about the viral “Cat in the Hat” trend spreading on TikTok, a social media phenomenon involving creepy, AI-generated or digitally altered images and videos of the Dr. Seuss character appearing in dark or unusual places. Some posts include unsettling warnings or vague threats aimed at local schools and communities.

What is the viral “Cat in the Hat” trend?

Videos and photos often show a creepy or distorted version of the Cat in the Hat walking through neighborhoods at night, standing in dark alleys, or appearing inside school hallways. Many of these images and videos are created using artificial intelligence, while others feature people wearing costumes and acting in an eerie way.

What Are the Threats?

Some posts include ominous warnings or lists of specific middle and high schools. The posts may claim that the character is “coming” or tell people to lock their doors.

There have Been real-life Cases.

Although many of the images are fake or AI-generated, the trend has caused real concern and, in some cases, real-world consequences.

According to a report from WAVY, a 14-year-old Colorado high school student was arrested on Aug. 31 after allegedly posting a video connected to the viral “Cat in the Hat” trend, which has been causing alarm in communities.

The Grand Junction Police Department was notified on Friday about a post suggesting that someone dressed as the “Cat in the Hat” would appear at West Middle School and at other random residences. Because of the potential concern, police increased their presence at both the middle school and Grand Junction High School.

After an investigation, police and school security determined there was no credible threat to students, staff, or the community.

Police later identified the person who allegedly made the post as a Grand Junction High School student and took him into custody. He was arrested on suspicion of interfering with staff, faculty or students at educational institutions and of harassment. He was later released to his parents.
