What was supposed to be a friendly tennis tournament between DMV-area schools has instead sparked controversy after racist imagery surfaced in tournament materials, prompting the University of Maryland to suspend its club tennis team indefinitely.

According to a statement from UMD Recreation and Wellness, the university learned shortly after the program was distributed that it contained “a graphic containing racist imagery targeting people who are Black or African American,” NBC News reported.

The materials were emailed to other university tennis clubs participating in the weekend’s fall tournament in College Park, the university said.

Howard University’s Women’s Club Tennis Team was among the groups scheduled to participate. Instead, the students were confronted with what Howard President Wayne A.I. Frederick described as “deeply offensive and racist imagery included in tournament materials distributed by members of the University of Maryland Club Tennis Team.”

Although the precise details of the graphic have not been publicly confirmed by UMD, a statement posted to the Howard club tennis team’s Instagram account said the image featured “a recognizable symbol associated with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK)” beneath the University of Maryland club tennis logo.

The Ku Klux Klan is a white supremacist organization responsible for decades of racial terror and violence against Black Americans.

UMD said the incident may have involved only a few team members but suspended the entire club while the university investigates. The matter has also been referred to the University of Maryland Police Department, which confirmed it is investigating but declined to provide further details to NBC News.

“The University of Maryland is horrified and expresses its regret and sincere apology for the harm that this has caused,” the university said in its statement.

The club tennis team forfeited its matches, while the tournament continued with the other participating schools. UMD also said team leaders apologized to the other participating colleges and accepted responsibility for distributing the graphic.

Frederick condemned the incident and emphasized accountability in collegiate athletics.

“Let me be unequivocal: There is no place for racism, intimidation, or imagery rooted in hatred and racial violence in collegiate athletics, on our campuses, or anywhere in our society,” Frederick said.

“The imagery evoked a painful history of racial terror and exclusion that has no place in an environment dedicated to learning, personal development, and mutual respect,” he added.
