The president’s personal police force, more commonly referred to as the Department of Justice, is doing that thing again where they attack someone for being oppositional.

And by oppositional, I mean telling the truth. Because when you start believing your own lies, you eventually get federal prosecutors to present evidence to a grand jury in Washington, D.C., to determine whether former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson may have lied to Congress in her testimony about the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, CBS News reports.

Hutchinson has been on President Donald Trump’s bad side ever since she testified in 2022 before the House committee investigating the attack.

Among other things, she relayed a story she said came from then-White House deputy chief of staff Tony Ornato. According to Hutchinson’s testimony, Trump grew furious after his lead Secret Service agent refused to drive him to the Capitol following his speech to supporters, CBS News reported.

Trump had encouraged those supporters to head to the Capitol, where Congress was performing the routine constitutional duty of certifying the 2020 presidential election results. The problem was that Trump had lost the election and was determined to pretend otherwise.

He told his supporters, “After this, we’re going to walk down, and I’ll be there with you.”

Hutchinson also testified that Ornato told her Trump lunged toward the steering wheel. Trump’s driver, however, testified under oath that the president did not attempt to grab it.

CBS News could not determine which part of Hutchinson’s testimony prosecutors are scrutinizing. So we have an investigation into whether she lied, but no clear public explanation of what prosecutors believe she lied about.

And here’s the particularly interesting part: Rather than the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which would typically handle such a case involving a former White House employee, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division is reportedly investigating Hutchinson.

The same administration that has spent years trying to rewrite the history of Jan. 6 is now examining the testimony of a former aide who helped expose what happened inside the White House that day.

Funny how the administration’s definition of justice keeps expanding to include investigating the people who made Trump look bad, while the president and his allies continue trying to sanitize an attack on American democracy.

Apparently, in Trump’s Washington, telling Congress what you witnessed can become a crime worth investigating. Trying to overturn an election? That’s another story.
