At some point, one would expect a Trump voter to sit back and ask themselves if their life is better under the president they helped get into office.

And if this voter were being truthful with themselves, they’d look at the cost of gas and food and say no. Because despite all the president’s grandiose promises before taking office, Trump voters seem to ignore one obvious truth: The president is a liar.

Full stop.

With the midterms quickly approaching and inflation beating our collective asses, Trump has done everything in his power to spin the rising cost of everything not nailed down as not his fault.

He claimed that concerns about affordability are a “con job by Democrats,” insisted consumer prices had fallen during his term when they had actually risen, and repeatedly claimed gas and diesel prices — which surged after he launched the war against Iran — would start falling soon.

“Numerous polls suggest voters aren’t buying Trump’s sales pitch, with respondents giving him low marks on the cost of living,” the CBC reports.

And no one is happy. Not regular people, not people with high IQs, and definitely not Trump voters. According to Silver Bulletin, a site that cares about these things, 70% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of inflation.

And since all of this has happened on his watch, Trump knows the Republican Party is vulnerable in the Nov. 3 midterm elections, which could spell nightmares for his administration should the GOP lose control of Congress.

Look how those Republican chickens have come home to roost.

“It looks like it’s just everyday expenses that are beginning to pile up and people are concerned about being able to afford,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling Center in Boston, told CBC News.

“It’s hard to imagine in the next three weeks there’ll be a solution to the gas price or the other costs of living associated with that,” he said.

And all of it has Trump on edge. For the past two weeks, Trump has flown to a bunch of red-state strongholds, including Alaska, Kansas, Ohio and Texas, trying to sell a mix of stories that include such greatest hits as “The Democrats Did It” and “Do You Want Iran to Have Nuclear Weapons?”

Because when you can’t convince people that their lives are getting better, the next best thing is to scare them into thinking things could be worse.

But there is a fundamental problem with Trump’s sales pitch: People cannot pay their grocery bills with campaign slogans. They cannot fill their gas tanks with accusations against Democrats. And they cannot make their mortgage payments with another speech about how America is supposedly winning.

Eventually, reality has a way of interrupting the show.

And here’s where Trump voters have a choice. They can keep pretending that the president is some helpless bystander watching the economy happen to him, or they can acknowledge that the man who promised to make everything cheaper is now asking them to accept excuses for why it isn’t.

Nobody is suggesting that a president can magically control every price or prevent every economic shock. But Trump spent years promising that he could do exactly that. He made the economy a centerpiece of his campaign, convinced voters he had the answers and demanded credit for the results he promised to deliver.

Now he wants to duck responsibility for the results voters are actually getting.

That is the con.

And on Nov. 3, voters will have an opportunity to decide whether they want to keep buying what Trump is selling. Republicans can blame Democrats, point fingers at Iran and send the president to as many friendly states as they want. But they cannot make voters forget what it costs to live in America right now.

At some point, even the most devoted Trump voter has to look at their bank account, look at the president, and ask a very simple question: If this is what winning looks like, why the hell am I losing?
