This US Airport Just Opened A 1st-Of-Its-Kind ‘Remote Terminal’ Around 20 Miles Away
Beginning June 1, travelers departing from Boston Logan International Airport can undergo Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening at a remote terminal about 20 miles from the flight hub.
Located in Framingham, the new terminal will be particularly convenient for jet-setters in the MetroWest region. Naturally, one might use the remote terminal instead of their designated one at Boston Logan if they’re trying to avoid long TSA wait times at the actual airport. After arriving at the flight hub from the remote terminal, the traveler can do any post-TSA activities or proceed directly to their gate.
The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) announced the travel development in a May 18 press release. The source explained that the option is a pilot program as of now, and the “first-of-its-kind.” After going through airport security at the Framingham location, passengers will board a bus that will transfer them to Boston Logan “beyond the security checkpoint.”
“The Remote Terminal pilot program is part of Massport’s broader vision to reimagine the travel experience and make the passenger journey more seamless, connected, and efficient,” said Davey. “Passengers in and around Metro West now have a new, low-stress way to reach Boston Logan. Imagine arriving at the airport, having already checked in and cleared security, and then being dropped off just steps from your gate. This is the kind of stress-free process we’re working to make a reality for everyone.”
Inside The Remote Terminal Program At Boston Logan International Airport
There are a few stipulations travelers should be aware of if they’re considering using Boston Logan’s remote terminal. One of them is that travelers taking the bus from the remote terminal to the airport will need to pay a $9 fare. Also, during the pilot program, the remote option is available only to those traveling on Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways between 5:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Travelers can make reservations on Massport’s website between 90 days and 90 minutes before their departure. To do so, they’ll need to book on the organization’s designed website page for the remote terminal. Massport says flyers with other airlines may be able to use the Framingham terminal at some point in the future. Those using the remote terminal are encouraged to make their reservations early, as bus seating is limited. Additionally, they should plan to reserve a bus that arrives at the airport “at least 45 minutes before [their] flight departs.”
PEOPLE reports that kids will be able to travel for free with adults via the remote terminal and its bus system. Additionally, the publication added that the Framingham terminal will have a 400-car parking area with a daily rate of $7. Moreover, travelers will be able to check in for their flights and drop off their luggage before going through TSA and hopping on the bus.
MetroWest travelers may also benefit from taking a return bus ride from the airport back to the remote terminal for an additional $9.
