JD Vance Tries His Best To Take Shots At Abdul El-Sayed, But He Just Isn’t Good At It [Op-Ed]

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is leading his opponent in Michigan’s Senate race, former GOP Rep. Mike Rogers, in polls across media by as many as six points, and, of course, that has Republican officials across the country, as well as their right-wing media sycophants, in panic mode. 

The problem is Republicans really only have two moves when it comes to young, brown, charismatic political opponents like El-Sayed: racist, Islamophobic fearmongering, and calling them communists or socialists, which they clearly think are interchangeable terms. We saw this with NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and former President Barack Obama, both of whom — if I’m remembering correctly — won their elections.

Anyway, Vice President JD Vance is currently doing his best to be the oil tanker blocking the tracks the El-Sayed train is traveling down, but he has two problems: It’s kind of difficult to be xenophobic when you have an Indian wife and half Indian children, and Vance can’t match El-Sayed’s swag because, well, he’s a huge dork.

What Vance does just fine, though, is be hypocritical in the most obvious ways possible, while simply not acknowledging that, when it comes to him and his MAGA ilk, every accusation is a confession.

For example…

“I realize that there’s something about Abdul El-Sayed that is very, very evil and on the rise in the United States of America today,” Vance said this week while campaigning for Rogers at an event in Sterling Heights hosted by MAGA Inc., President Trump’s super PAC, according to the New York Times. “And it’s people who see themselves not as citizens of a common nation fighting for every single person — whether they’re Jewish or Christian, whether they’re white or Black or brown — but see themselves as fighting for one group at the expense of others, and that is how, ladies and gentlemen, you destroy the United States of America.”

Now, Vance — IKYFL.

Certainly Vance is not claiming to be a person who fights “for every single person, whether they’re Jewish or Christian, whether they’re white or Black or brown” when this is the same JD Vance who  went to bat for a group of Young Republican “kids” in their 20s, 30s and 40s, who were caught in a group chat being Nazi-loving racists, calling Black people N-words, monkeys and “the watermelon people,” musing about raping female political rivals, and making disparaging remarks about Jewish people, and talked about throwing people in “gas chambers.”

Mind you, when Vance called El-Sayed “evil,” he did so in reference to the Democratic nominee meeting with members of the Jewish Democratic Caucus to apologize for a remark he made in March after an assailant drove a truck into a synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Mich., saying he regretted saying that “hurt people hurt people.”

“My message to Abdul El-Sayed is: You can pal around with terrorist sympathizers, and you can say that America deserved 9/11, or you could empathize not with the children who were targeted at Temple Israel, but with the attacker,” Vance said.

But, again, when a group of grown men who call themselves “Young Republicans” were proving themselves to be anti-Black Hitler acolytes, Vance had a different response that didn’t seem to be aimed at fighting for any of those groups he said El-Sayed wouldn’t fight for.

“Grow up,” Vance said. “Don’t focus on what kids say in group chats.”

This is also the same JD Vance who, last year, during a Turning Point USA convention in Phoenix, told an audience full of the white and eternally fragile, “In the United States of America, you don’t have to apologize for being white anymore,” and them moments later, said of Rep. Jasmine Crockett, “She wants to be a senator, though her street girl persona is about as real as her nails.”

So, please, Vance, tell us more about how you’re fighting for everyone even if they’re Black by joining Laura Loomer and the rest of the chorus line of MAGA bigots who are calling Crockett “ghetto,” a “fake ghetto hoodrat,” a “ghetto Black b*tch,” a wannabe “gangsta” who “wants you to think she’s from the hood,” and a “fraud” who is only pretending to be of the Black community, but is too educated to actually be of the Black community — just because she’s a blunt, outspoken Black woman who sounds authentically like a Black woman when she speaks.

Also, are you fighting for Haitians, too, or are you still leading a campaign of lies and hate speech against Haitians in Springfield, claiming they were abducting people’s pets and eating them, and spreading the falsehood that Haitian migrants are responsible for a steep increase in HIV cases in Ohio, which health officials in the state also debunked?

Anyway, Vance also had a little pseudo-tough talk for El-Sayed over a remark he made about his wife, Usha Vance.

“Keep my wife’s name the hell out of your mouth, because she’s way out of your league,” Vance said.

This appeared to be in response to El-Sayed mocking Vance on X,  writing, “So do we think JD is taking Usha with him back in time to meet Papaw, or no?” which was in response to Vance previously saying he would “love to go back in time and tell my Papaw that there is a man who claims to stand for working people who says not only should we have Sharia law, but if you criticize it, you’re a white supremacist,” despite El-Sayed never having said anything of the sort.

Of course, Vance had more fake smoke for El-Sayed than he had for podcaster Nick Fuentes, who used an ethnic slur to describe Usha and called the vice president a “race traitor” for marrying her, or any of the myriad of MAGA bigots who have attacked his wife and kids.

I guess all those racists were just “kids” doing “what kids do” as well.

Vance also ran to Fox News whining about how families should be kept “out of this stuff.”

Apparently, Vance forgot that, just last month, President Donald Trump posted side-by-side images of himself and Melania vs. El-Sayed and his wife to illustrate “Two VERY DIFFERENT Americas.”

But don’t worry about your MAGA delusion-induced forgetfulness, Vance, because El-Sayed remembered it for you.

Also, the man is just plain better at working the crowd than you are.

If El-Sayed wins his Senate race in November, it will be, at least in part, because people like Vance just haven’t figured out that their reliance on their white Christian nationalist culture war will only take them so far politically. 

But even that won’t change their racist, xenophobic and generally bigoted tune.

Sad.
