Qantas Data Breach Exposes Personal Information Of Over 5 Million Customers

Qantas Airways confirmed that hackers stole and leaked personal data of more than five million customers on the dark web after the airline refused to pay a ransom. The cyberattack, carried out by a group calling itself “Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters,” came to light on October 13, 2025.

According to reports from The Guardian, the leaked data includes customers’ names, email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, and frequent flyer membership numbers. Qantas stated that no financial details were compromised. However, cybersecurity experts at Outpost24 warned that the stolen information gives criminals everything they need for spear-phishing and social engineering attacks.

Qantas Breach Details And Scope

The airline detected unusual activity on a third-party customer service platform on June 30, 2025, and confirmed a cyberattack two days later. Outpost24’s analysis revealed that hackers released approximately 153GB of data, compromising over five million customer records. The data appeared on the dark web between October 11 and 13, after Qantas missed the ransom deadline.

Qantas obtained an injunction from the NSW Supreme Court banning anyone from accessing, sharing, or publishing the stolen data. Minister for Cybersecurity Tony Burke warned, “No one should go looking for it on the dark web, even if you’re looking for your own material,” in an interview with ABC News Breakfast.

Risks To Affected Customers

Although no payment details were leaked, authorities expect scammers to exploit the stolen data in new phishing campaigns. Experts say the combination of personal information and frequent flyer numbers enables highly targeted scams, such as fake flight updates or fraudulent redemption offers.

The national cyber security coordinator confirmed that several federal politicians were among those whose home addresses were exposed. Qantas said it has emailed affected customers with details of what information was compromised. The airline continues to work with authorities and cybersecurity experts to evaluate the full impact and strengthen its systems.
