Here’s What Fans Can Expect At Black Heritage Day At The Houston Rodeo

Each year, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo attracts millions of people for a weeks-long celebration that brings together tradition, entertainment, and culture on one of the largest stages in Texas. Black Heritage Day is one of the rodeo’s most meaningful cultural celebrations, honoring legacy and community while delivering a sense of pride.

Black cowboys and cowgirls have made significant contributions to Western heritage and Texas culture, and Black Heritage Day organizers are educating the community about their significance. Established in 1993 by the Black Heritage Committee, Black Heritage Day honors this often-overlooked legacy.

“Our goal as a committee is to continue to expose people to the contributions African Americans have made to Western culture and Texas,” LaShandra (Shaun) Boddy, Black Heritage Committee Chairman, tells Travel Noire. “Overall, there are a lot of people who are not well-informed about Black cowboys and cowgirls’ contributions. We bring in exhibitors who share this history from the beginning.”

According to Boddy, Black Heritage Day is a family-friendly event featuring a range of activities and performances for people of all ages. From cultural showcases that spotlight generations of impact, education panels, and can’t-miss entertainment, here is everything you need to know about Black Heritage Day at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for 2026.

Planning your Houston Rodeo experience is key to a seamless and smooth experience. Whether it’s your first time or you’re a frequent participant, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Plan for lots of walking. Wearing boots is on-brand and in style, but your best bet is to wear shoes that are already broken in because there is nothing enjoyable about wearing new boots for long periods. You will likely be standing or walking around. There’s no clear bag policy on the grounds or inside NRG stadium but clear bags can be a faster way to get through security. Be sure to pack a portable charger.

While most events and experiences are cashless, bring some cash for the carnival food and games.

Expect heavy traffic around the stadium during the Lyft/Uber drop-off. Consider taking the METRORail Red Line to the Stadium Park/Astrodome stop. You can park for $25 at the Fannin South Transit Center, then take the rail one stop to the Stadium. For those planning to drive, park at a shuttle lot for $25 and take the shuttle bus or parking lot tram to the stadium.

“Remember, once you pay to get on the grounds, you will be able to participate in all the events for Black Heritage Day, including the talent showcase, the corral, exhibitors, and the Divine Nine showcase,” Boddy shares.
