Federal agents executed a search warrant at the Washington, DC, area home of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) on Monday morning for reasons that apparently had to do with a criminal ‌fraud investigation into her immigration paperwork. Beyond that, there’s really no information available about why the raid was ordered, but if one were to speculate, there’s a long history of President Donald Trump attacking Omar for no other reason than because she’s Somali, and because she speaks out against him and his policies.

So, there’s that.

“Today in the Washington, D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation,” a Justice Department spokesperson said in a statement, according to Reuters.

To be clear, members of the Trump administration, including Vice President JD Vance and White House chief of staff Stephen Miller, have been talking about investigating Omar for immigration fraud, but no one in the administration has been able to specify a reason they suspect her of committing it.

Of course, this is the same JD Vance who launched a racist propaganda campaign about Haitians eating pets in Springfield, Ohio, based on social media rumors, and it’s the same Stephen Miller who has made dreaming of an America without black and brown foreigners his entire personality. But no, I’m sure they have plenty of evidence to back their suspicions, and this whole investigation isn’t just a xenophobic fishing expedition at all.

From the Associated Press:

“It certainly seems like something fishy is there, but everybody’s entitled to equal justice under the laws,” Vance told reporters in May. “So we’re going to investigate it. We’re going to take a look at it. If we think there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime.”

In a separate interview with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson, Vance said without offering evidence that “we actually think that Ilhan Omar definitely committed immigration fraud against the United States of America.”

He said that he and deputy White House chief of staff Stephen Miller had been discussing it and “trying to look at what the remedies are.”

“That’s the thing that we’re trying to figure out,” he said. “What are the legal remedies now that we know that she’s committed immigration fraud. How do you go after her? How do you investigate her? How do you actually do the thing? How do you build the case necessary to get some, some, some justice for the American people?”

So, back in May, Vance went from “it certainly seems” and “if we think” to “now that we know” all in the same conversation, and we’re to believe these raging white nationalists aren’t just making it all up as they go along?

Then there’s Trump, who has called for Omar and the rest of the Black and brown congresswomen who make up The Squad to “go back where they came from” during both his terms, despite the fact that they’re all either born in the U.S. or, in Omar’s case, were raised here since they were a child.

In November of last year, Trump suggested to  Fox News’ Laura Ingraham that Omar can’t rightfully criticize him because she’s “from Somalia.”

“I look at somebody that comes from Somalia, where they don’t have anything – they don’t have police, they don’t have military, they don’t have anything, all they have is crime – and [Omar] comes in and tells us how to run our country!” he said.

Then he did it again a month later, during a Mar-a-Lago press conference, where he attacked Omar and all of Somalia while speaking about the shootings of two National Guard members, which, of course, had nothing to do with Omar or the country where she was born.

Around that same time, the president of the United States took to social media and described Omar as “always wrapped in her swaddling hijab,” and falsely claimed she “probably came into the U.S.A. illegally.” Then he repeated a debunked MAGA rumor that she married her own brother to get a green card, a lie he also repeated to reporters outside of Air Force One.

Then in January, Trump announced that “the DOJ and Congress are looking at ‘Congresswoman’ Ilhan Omar, who left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars,” and said “time will tell” whether there was any merit to the investigation, which we haven’t heard anything about since, likely because time told, and there was no such merit. In fact, USA Today reported at the time that the bulk of her finances were actually joint finances she shares with her husband, who has a stake in a California winery and a venture capital firm. Then, of course, there’s the fact that financial disclosures show the majority of lawmakers in Congress are millionaires, which never seems to matter since Congress is so overwhelmingly white and male.

So, yeah, we’ll have to wait and see if this new investigation is legitimate or if it’s yet another example of the president and his administration of sycophants weaponizing lawfare against a political rival, while claiming ad nauseam that it’s actually the 34-time felon who is the victim of political “witch hunts” via the courts.

Because as we all know, when it comes to this administration, every allegation is a confession.
