Congratulations, Google, You Played Yourself! [Op-Ed]

Welp, big tech companies and other corporations are still marching to President Donald Trump’s absurdly stupid drum, because that has worked out so well for them in the past.
As most of you know by now, last week, the president who has made no actual achievements most U.S. citizens are proud of — forcing him to rely on his obsession for renaming things to forge his non-legacy — signed an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” a move that has been widely mocked in the U.S. and across the globe as Trump’s latest temper tantrum, brought on by Canada’s continues refusal to bow down amid Trump’s ignorant, tariff-based trade war with the nation.
Canada stood tall against an octogenarian toddler of a tyrant, and Trump responded by unilaterally changing the name of a lake so old and culturally revered that they named a Canadian province after it. And while MapQuest has declared its refusal to play Trump’s ridiculous rename game, Google has decided to take Trump’s old, stubby, decrepit, rotted-out hand and kiss the ring, updating its maps application to include “Lake America” for users in the U.S.
What Google should have done:
What Google did:
According to PBS News, Google, which, of course, also updated its maps to include the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” said the decision was based on its “long-standing policy” of using names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), implying that is wasn’t a political decision or a show of support for Trump. It also noted that Canadian users will still see the name Lake Ontario, and the rest of the world will see both names.
“People using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Lake America,’ those in Canada will continue to see ‘Lake Ontario,’ and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names,” Google said. “These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now.”
Apparently, it’s too much to expect certain corporations to do the ethical thing and not participate in normalizing the Idiocracy that has come with Trump and MAGA. It wouldn’t have even been a real act of bravery for Google to say, “You know what? This is ridiculous. Trump is ridiculous, and I think we can deviate from our policy until there are well-adjusted adults in the White House again.”
Again, Trump has become extremely unpopular both in the U.S. and abroad. He’s making enemies out of our closest allies while his policies have done the opposite of making America affordable again. Google could have drawn a line in the sand, refusing to take part in the ghetto-fication of the U.S. and its powers, and the only repercussions it might have faced is mobs of angry MAGA idiots calling for boycotts and using Google to figure out how it can spread the word.
Instead, it decided to just be an American country doing American things. The rest of the world is looking at us like we’re the musty kid in class, and corporations like Google have decided to simply get used to the stench.
Sad.
