Brittney Griner’s Estranged Wife Wants Her WNBA Money Considered In Divorce

Brittney Griner’s estranged wife, Cherelle Griner, wants the court to consider the WNBA star’s bank account when determining whether she should receive financial support following their divorce.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Cherelle filed a response to Brittney’s divorce petition following the couple’s eight-year marriage. Cherelle was particularly vocal during Brittney’s nearly 10-month detention in Russia, publicly advocating for the basketball star’s release.

In the new paperwork, Cherelle lists June 18, 2018, as the date of their marriage and July 24, 2026, as their date of separation. She says the marriage is “irretrievably broken with no hope for reconciliation.”

The couple share a child, Bash Griner, and Cherelle is requesting joint legal custody. She wants the court to determine physical custody and parenting time based on what it considers to be in their child’s best interests.

But money is also a major issue in the divorce.

Cherelle is asking the court to award her financial support, arguing there is a “substantial disparity” between her income and Brittney’s. She says she is “unable to meet her reasonable financial needs on a monthly basis without continued support.”

That income gap is particularly notable given Brittney’s current WNBA contract. The veteran center is playing for the Connecticut Sun and reportedly signed a one-year deal worth more than $1 million.

Cherelle’s filing does not necessarily mean the court will award her the amount of support she is requesting. The court will ultimately determine whether support is appropriate and, if so, how much.

The divorce proceedings remain ongoing, and neither side has publicly commented on the latest filing.
