Trump Says Iran Can ‘Take Out’ Los Angeles And San Diego Because He Hates America [Op-Ed]

Look, there’s a reason many Republicans want President Donald Trump to sit himself down somewhere and stay off of the midterm campaign trail. They understand that a president whose approval rating sinks to a record low and then breaks that record nearly every week is not the draw he thinks he is. And they also know the longer Trump is traveling to wherever people will come to hear him speak, the more likely he’s going to say something like this:

“Remember, with the war, it’s just artificial. It’s a little bit high,” Trump said at a rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, on Monday, mischaracterizing what are actually soaring costs attributed directly to the war he started in Iran. “It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe. They can take out a city — let ’em take, let ’em take out Los Angeles, let ’em take out San Diego. That’s — this is a very small price to pay.”

Before we get into how we have fallen so far into the American Idiocracy that white conservatives are clapping and cheering for a sitting president of the United States who just called on the nation he started a war with to “take out” U.S. cities, which are populated by nearly 4 million and 1.5 million people respectively — population sizes that would include countless military personnel — let’s talk about the crowd reaction when he said high prices were “a small price to pay.” Because there was none. 

That crowd was awkwardly silent, because people are broke and they can see what’s printed on their grocery receipts. So, to break that silence, Trump defaulted to the only war he’s capable of fighting: his culture war. Trump pivoted to calling for our enemy to demolish LA and San Diego, because he understood that, among his supporters, it would not only be acceptable that he offer up cities full of Democrats, liberals, and immigrants to be destroyed by the Iranian military, but they would gleefully applaud it.

We should remember that next time Trump, his administration, the GOP, and all his MAGA cultists claim it’s “the left” who are responsible for dangerous political rhetoric that puts people in harm’s way.

Now, we know what the Trump-whisperers in right-wing media and the rest of the MAGA world are going to say about this: “He was just joking, and the liberal snowflakes are so triggered!” Never mind that before Trump, the people wouldn’t accept this kind of “joke” from any president, especially not the Black guy they called an Islamic terrorist or terrorist sympathizer for eight years. 

The truth is, it didn’t even sound like Trump was joking. There was no hint of humor in his tone. We know how he sounds when he says something absurd just to get a cheap laugh from a crowd of idiots. This wasn’t that. Trump arbitrarily sent the military to these cities. He sent ICE to terrorize their communities. He targeted California’s elections with his baseless election-rigging propaganda.

 Nah, man — I think he meant that shit!

As for the crowd cheering him on, it’s just more proof of what I have written several times: white conservatives claim to be the patriots, but they’re actually the ones who hate America.

Oh, they might truly love the ideal of the U.S. that exists in their nostalgic, white nationalist minds, but they hate the nation that actually exists in the 21st Century. If you hate Democrats, “leftists,” immigrants, Black Lives Matter advocates (and/or Black lives in general), Muslims, the LGBTQ community, feminists, critical race theorists, pro-choice advocates, and the ubiquitous “woke,” then, dammit, you hate a portion of the country’s population that far outnumbers your own.

And that’s all Trump has ever had to campaign on: white hate. That’s it, and that’s all.
