Pride Beyond June: Cities Where LGBTQ+ Celebration Continues All Year

Just because June is Pride Month doesn’t mean that celebrating, supporting, and advocating for the community ends on the 30th. Across the country, travelers can find cities where Pride is celebrated year-round, and both LGBTQIA+ members and allies make their presence felt and their voices heard.

There are many reasons why traveling for Pride events outside of June can be fun and convenient. Some Pride events after June present opportunities to focus more on community building and enrichment versus partying and celebration. Another plus is that visitors may be able to experience local gayborhoods and designated districts without the additional foot traffic from June crowds, which could provide a less touristy experience. In some instances, travelers will also benefit from more affordable, off-peak travel costs if they attend Pride events after June, when expensive summer travel won’t be a concern.

Even if you’re visiting a city for a major LGBTQIA+-centered event, if it’s outside of June, you may still be able to experience the city in a different but special way.

Cities Where LGBTQ+ Pride Lives Year-Round

Atlanta, GA

During Atlanta Black Pride, which takes place annually during Labor Day weekend, visitors can expect big parties, a thoughtful focus on intersectionality, and community organizing and advocacy. Now in its 20th anniversary, the event is one of the world’s largest gatherings centered on Black LGBTQIA+ community members. Annually, well over 100,000 people attend.

Atlanta actually celebrates its official citywide Pride Festival and Parade in October. Revolving around National Coming Out Day, it’s another outside-of-June moment to keep on your calendar. Visiting in October, you’ll also be able to beat the summertime heat.

Chicago, IL

Always held in August, Northalsted Market Days is a weekend street festival in the country’s oldest LGBTQIA+ neighborhood. Taking place in Northalsted from August 7-9 this year across a half-mile stretch, the event features drag shows, live music, food vendors, and a vibrant celebration of queer identity.

If you want to celebrate Pride and spooky season simultaneously, consider visiting Chi-Town in October for the annual Haunted Halsted Halloween Parade in Northalsted. Fun-spirited and lighthearted, be ready for costume competitions, a pub crawl, and Chicago Thriller – a flash mob that does the choreographed dance from Michael Jackson’s iconic music video.

New Orleans, LA

Also in September, during Labor Day weekend, New Orleans hosts Southern Decadence. Regarding the five-day affair, the city says the event “is often regarded as a combination of New Orleans Pride and Gay Mardi Gras, though with a bawdier, adult-focused twist.”

While enjoying the lively revelry and Parade, guests will also have ample opportunity to support LGBTQ-owned businesses and gathering spots during one of the most engaging times of the year.
