Groomed For Love: Matthew And Shannon Secretly Eloped In Vegas—Then Celebrated With Everyone They Love In Atlanta
Growing up, Matthew didn’t believe marriage would be part of his story.
He rarely saw Black gay men in loving, committed relationships. There weren’t many examples in his own life, and he didn’t see couples that looked like him on television either. So, over time, he came to accept a different vision for his future. He’d be the successful friend. The fun uncle. The one surrounded by love without necessarily finding a lifelong love of his own.
Then, with some courage, one slide into the DMs changed everything.
After coming across one of Shannon’s videos on Instagram, Matthew decided to send him a message. What began as a lighthearted conversation quickly turned into a genuine connection. The pair went on a few dates, but it took some time before romance officially blossomed.
Looking back, Matthew says their relationship unfolded naturally. “It felt like hanging out with one of my homies,” he says. “That’s how love should feel.”
That friendship became the heartbeat of their relationship. Shared interests brought them closer, including a love for sports. But it was the way they made one another feel that transformed things into something much deeper.
For Matthew, Shannon became the person who gave him permission to exhale. “He lets me loosen up,” he says. “He allows me to be myself and just relax.” As for Shannon, Matthew became something equally meaningful, a safe place. Together, they built a relationship rooted in trust and the freedom to simply be themselves. It was a healthy foundation for love to form. Shannon wanted that love to last forever.
So when it came time to propose, he wanted Matthew to be swept off his feet, experiencing the same kind of surprise and intentionality that had defined their relationship from the very beginning. Without Matthew suspecting a thing, Shannon planned an unforgettable proposal during a getaway. Family members knew what was about to happen and kept quiet, while Matthew believed they were simply set to enjoy another adventure. This adventure, however, would be like no other.
Months later, the couple embarked on another adventure to make things official. Rather than waiting for a traditional ceremony, they secretly exchanged vows during an intimate elopement in Las Vegas on November 11, 2025. With only a videographer and a wedding planner there to document every moment, the newlyweds celebrated their love. They eloped before returning home to plan what family and friends believed would be their actual wedding day.
Only the wedding had already happened. They were getting ready to witness a promise that had already been made.
When guests arrived, everything looked exactly as expected. Chairs were perfectly arranged. The ceremony space was beautifully designed. Loved ones settled into their seats, waiting for Matthew and Shannon to walk down the aisle.
Instead, a wall opened. Behind it stood a large screen. As confusion turned into curiosity, the couple’s wedding film from Las Vegas began to play. Their loved ones weren’t witnessing the ceremony. They were witnessing the reveal.
The room quickly filled with tears as family and friends experienced the couple’s vows together for the very first time. By the time the film ended, joy had completely taken over.
It was time for the celebration.

Wanting their reception to feel unmistakably like home, Matthew and Shannon infused the evening with the culture that has shaped their lives in Atlanta. Rather than serving a formal plated dinner, they invited guests to roam between food stations featuring hibachi, comfort foods, and even wings from one of their favorite Atlanta strip clubs.
“We wanted people to enjoy themselves,” Matthew says. “We wanted the night to flow.”
It did. The DJ spun some of the couple’s favorite songs. And the guests never left the dance floor. Family celebrated, new friendships were formed, and love filled the room.
One moment, however, remains especially close to the couple’s heart.
Watching Shannon’s Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers surround him in love before hopping together became a beautiful reminder that marriage isn’t just about two people. It’s strengthened by the community.
Looking around the room that night, Matthew realized they hadn’t simply planned a memorable reception. They had created an experience that reflected exactly who they are. Intentional. Joyful. Overflowing with love. For him, that’s the best part of this whole story. The little boy who never imagined marriage was possible eventually found himself standing beside the man who changed what forever looked like. And that’s a real reason to celebrate.
