GOP Rep Moves To Impeach Pete Hegseth, Because, Well, We All Know Why [Op-Ed]

Earlier this month, we reported that more than a few congressional Republicans were expressing that they have about had it with Defense Secretary of High-T Warrior Ethos and Pulp Fiction Pamphlets Pete Hegseth. (I mean, since we’re just changing the names of offices all willy-nilly now, might as well go all the way.) Well, it turns out one member of the House GOP is doing more than just talking about how much he’s done with President Donald Trump’s DE-White hire. In fact, on Tuesday, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) introduced a resolution to impeach Hegseth on the House floor, and he said he kept the resolution a secret from his party leaders because he did not want to “show his hand.”

Bruh — when Republicans are playing 5-D chess against other Republicans in a plot to oust a Republican idiot whose ousting might make the Republican idiots who appointed and confirmed him look bad, things are just not going well for the so-called “common sense” party.

The Kentucky Republican, who has been a frequent critic of the Trump administration’s military operations in Iran, introduced his resolution on the House floor Tuesday afternoon. 

“I didn’t want to show it to anybody,” he said during an appearance on CNN’s “The Source” later that evening. “I was afraid that they would do something to subvert me getting on the floor for an hour and 20 minutes and reading these articles.”

Massie told host Kaitlan Collins that he had “not heard” back from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) about his resolution, noting the GOP leader has “48 hours” to call a vote. 

“This is a hot war,” he said. “This could become a nuclear war, and in the interim, even if it doesn’t, there are civilian casualties that are racking up greater than they would have otherwise because another one of my articles of impeachment shows that Peter Hegseth has degraded the ability of the DOD to minimize civilian casualties.”

Unfortunately for Massie, he’s probably going out on a thin and gnarled limb if he’s hoping to get much support among his colleagues in the MAGA-subordinate GOP, and he damn sure won’t get any help from the White House. 

According to CBS News, Attorney General Todd Blanche has already defended Hegseth’s record, likely in response to the impeachment news, telling reporters that “Secretary Hegseth is doing a phenomenal job, and the secretary of war doesn’t just go off and do things, so he follows the law.

“The DOJ plays a role in that, and we play an active role in making sure the laws are complied with,” Blanche continued.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson is doing what he often does when it’s time to use his authority to dodge a potentially impactful vote: tuck tail and cancel the session to avoid taking that matter up at all.

Speaker Mike Johnson said Wednesday he is canceling planned Thursday votes and sending members home for a seven-week recess a day earlier than expected.

The decision lops another day off a preelection legislative schedule that Johnson had already truncated by two weeks. It also allows members to avoid having to take a vote on an impeachment resolution introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) targeting Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, which would have hit the floor no later than Thursday under House rules.

Johnson also reportedly called Massie’s bid to kick Hegseth to the curb “ridiculous,” and accused Massie of engaging in a “publicity stunt.”

“It’s a publicity stunt by someone who wants attention,” he said. “It will immediately be tabled, of course, but we probably won’t do that today. We’ll probably do it when we come back. But it’s a stunt. Secretary Hegseth has done an extraordinary job.”

In our previous report, I wrote that under Hegseth, ” the Pentagon has become disorganized, and military leaders are consistently at odds with the Christian conservative “warrior ethos” cosplayer, who leaks confidential war plans on Signal, blocks Black and female military officers from being promoted, arbitrarily bans trans people from serving, calls all military command to a single, publicly announced, location so he can tell them they’re too fat and too woke, and, for whatever reason, wakes up one morning and decides he wants to check everyone’s testosterone.” Apparently, what I described was a “phenomenal” and “extraordinary job” done the MAGA way.

Of course, we’re talking about the same Mike Johnson, who, according to CBS, told reporters on Wednesday that, more than 600 days into Trump’s woefully unpopular second term, the astronomically high gas prices caused by Trump’s war in Iran were actually caused by “Democratic policy.”

“Iran will not have a nuclear weapon. That was an important objective of American foreign policy for the last half-century,” he said during the press conference where he announced the House would go home early. “That’s taken care of, and now we got to get gas prices down. But I want to remind you as well: There’s another big factor of why gas prices are high. This is the result of bad Democrat policy.”

Yeah — according to AAA, the national average price for regular gas is $4.37 a gallon. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the average price for gas in January 2025, President Joe Biden’s last month in office, was $3.08. Gee, I wonder what happened between now and then. Let’s see if Johnson knows.

“[The Democrats] want to squeeze production of U.S. oil and gas, and that is a disaster for the American people,” he said. “And so you have to keep the right people in charge to make sure that your fuel prices come down.”

Yeah, sorry, Massie, but your party has spent the last decade or so fostering a culture of delusion, and now you couldn’t impeach Freddy Krueger if he invaded your dreams wearing a MAGA hat.

On the bright side, some Republicans did join House Democrats in voting for the third time to block Trump from taking further military action against Iran. In fact, CBS reported that seven Republicans, including Massie, crossed the political aisle to join every Democrat in voting 220 to 204 to rein in Trump and Hegseth — which, of course, is a great sign that the latter is doing a “phenomenal” and “extraordinary job,” amirite?
