GOP Redistricting Efforts Massively Backfire In Midterms

I cannot tell you how hype I was to walk out of Godzilla Minus Zero last night (great movie, we’ll talk about it Friday) and see that the Blue tsunami was in full effect. I took real joy in it because Republican state legislatures spent much of last year and this year engaging in redistricting efforts to essentially rig the midterms in their favor and maintain control of the House. By and large, those redistricting efforts either had little impact or outright backfired on the GOP.
Take, for instance, Texas. Texas was the state that kicked off the redistricting wars last year, using the deadly Kerr County floods as an excuse to call a special session focused on redrawing the state’s congressional maps. It was a long, fraught process that saw Democrats leave the state, and state Rep. Nicole Collier being held as a political prisoner in the state House.
So you’d think that all that drama would result in a positive outcome for Texas Republicans, right? Sike!
The Texas Tribune reports that Texas Republicans flipped only one of those five seats and lost two they previously held. This was a textbook dummymander, as Texas Republicans designed their new map around the gains President Donald Trump made with Latino voters in 2024. Those very same voters dramatically shifted back to the Democratic Party, fueling Texas’ blue shift.
In fact, the Texas redistricting effort is perhaps one of the worst self-inflicted blows of this election cycle, as it directly led California to redraw its congressional map to neutralize the gains on the Texas map. So not only did Texas Republicans fail to capitalize on the new map, but California also picked up House seats previously held by Republicans.
I’d say I hate to see it, but I really, really don’t, y’all.
It was a similar story in South Carolina, where the state legislature implemented a new congressional map with the express purpose of removing Rep. Don Davis from his seat. That effort is looking like an abject failure: not only is Davis currently ahead in the vote count, but it’s also looking like Democrat Chuck Hubbard is unseating longtime Republican incumbent Rep. Virginia Foxx in the Fifth Congressional District.
Even in places where Republicans won on redrawn maps, they didn’t win by large margins. While Tennessee State Rep. Justin Pearson lost his Congressional bid after the state legislature eliminated what was previously a majority-Black district, it was only by a single percentage point.
Missouri voters have shot down the state’s redistricting effort. The Missouri state legislature has consistently been going against the will of the people, and it appears that Missouri voters have had enough.
The Supreme Court ordered the state to conduct its midterms with its original map and honor the ballot initiative that put the map to a vote. Voters soundly rejected that redistricting effort last night.
While Florida elected Republican Byron Donalds to the Governor’s office and Democrat Angie Nixon narrowly lost the Senate race, the state shifted blue in House races. Florida Democrats Jared Moskowitz, Kathy Castor and Pia Dandiya all won their races in districts redrawn to favor Republicans.
This is all the more shocking because many analysts predicted this would be one of the least competitive midterms in modern history because of the redistricting efforts.
If there’s anything to be learned here, it’s that all the gerrymandering in the world can’t save a party from an unpopular president and policy decisions that make day-to-day life worse for the average American.
