In today’s episode of They Don’t Keep Giving Him Cognitive Tests For Nothing, every day it’s looking more and more like it’s time to send President Donald Trump to whatever MAGA storage unit for old, white, probably demented elected officials they’re keeping Mitch McConnell in.

Because, first of all, where is he going, and who is he waving at here?

If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, it’s video footage of the president getting ready to depart for Kansas at the White House, then stopping to stare at and wave to a crowd that’s very much not there.

And the decline doesn’t end with Trump visibly wandering off to Never-Never Land in his mind while waving at—hell, I don’t know—AI Theodore Roosevelt, or whoever. The fact is, for this administration and the GOP that stays firmly in Trump’s pocket, every time Trump steps behind a podium or camera, the odds rise that he’ll say something that clues people in to how far he’s lost the plot.

Just look at this White House press conference, where he’s losing his shit at reporter after reporter, asking one of them, “What’s wrong with you? Are you sick?” as if these aren’t the exact questions somebody — anybody — should be asking him on at least an hourly basis.

I mean, he is in the Oval Office, yelling at press pool reporters like they’re nursing home nurses, and, look, maybe they should be.

After all, for some reason, he keeps describing the tests he has to take, telling us about the elephants and giraffes he has to identify, before concluding he’s a “genius” for getting the answers right.

Here he is, reminding us again that he doesn’t understand how percentages work and, likely, that he doesn’t remember giving us this nonsensical rundown of MAGA math before.

“We’re going to cut drug prices by 1,000%, 1,200%, 1,300%, 1,400%,” he said during a recent news conference. “A drug that sells for $10 in London sells for $130 in New York. We’ll cut it to $20. You can do the math yourselves. But in reality, it’s 2,000% and 3,000%.”

Of course, it’s possible his mental decline will work out well for Democrats, considering that he seems to have forgotten that being “thrown into a system where everyone gets healthcare” is a thing most people want.

Or that high “poverty rates” are a bad thing.

“African American poverty, Hispanic American poverty, and Native American poverty rates are the highest and the best numbers ever recorded by far,” he said at a rally, to the timid applause of people who are dedicated to grading the president on a curve, and pretending the thing he said wasn’t actually the thing he said.

Then, of course, there’s the issue with Trump being America’s racist grandpa — the doddery, old white man, who can’t stop using bigoted slurs and making off-color remarks, which isn’t a problem for Republicans so long as he’s directing them at Muslims, Somalis and trans people, but not so much when he forgets to draw the line at antisemitism.

From the New York Times:

President Trump invoked a centuries-old antisemitic trope to defend the aggressive debt-collecting tactics of Senator Roger Marshall, the first-term Republican fighting for re-election in Kansas, before the senator began his political career.

At a rally on Monday with Mr. Marshall in Park City, Kan., the president said Mr. Marshall’s opponents had unfairly cast him as “some kind of a Shylock-type guy,” an apparent reference to recent reporting by The New York Times that revealed that Mr. Marshall had filed lawsuits against more than 700 patients with outstanding medical bills during his decades-long career as an obstetrician-gynecologist. Mr. Marshall, The Times reported, routinely charged an 18 percent annual interest rate and also garnished patients’ paychecks and bank accounts. Mr. Trump did not mention The Times by name.

Shylock is the name of the Jewish moneylender from Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice.” The character, who demands a pound of human flesh as collateral for a loan, has become shorthand for antisemitic representations of avarice and usury.

If Trump were working any other job of any kind of importance, everyone around him would be telling him it’s time to retire. Instead, we’re out here playing around with the presidency and letting our supposedly great nation be run by someone who isn’t fit to run a hot-water bath unsupervised.

Sad.
