AOC Rides For Florida Senate Candidate Angie Nixon

The progressives are coming in hot, baby—much to the chagrin of establishment Democrats, neoliberals (same thing), and those who apparently don’t worry about money.

In the last year or so, there’s been a surge across the country in support of progressives mostly in places where the cost of living has soared (it’s the economy, stupid).

Florida seems to be no exception to this national trend, and the upset win of Angie Nixon over Alex Vindman in the Democratic Senate primary in August, is the most recent example

The New York Times reports that Nixon beat the brakes of the incumbent candidate by 12 points, by doing more than just holding the same old rallies: “Instead, [Nixon] makes brief appearances intended to sign up volunteers, get them to download a canvassing app and then push them to get right to work calling voters or knocking on doors.”

Nixon also spent significantly less than her opponent. As reported by NewsOne, Vindman had the backing of the Democratic establishment and raised significantly more than $16.3 million versus Nixon’s $975,000.

When Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez quietly went to Florida last week in support of Nixon, she spilled some of this DSA strategy:  “My favorite way to move is, we don’t go to the flashy places. This isn’t about fighting for Miami,” said Ocasio-Cortez  as reported by The New York Times.

AOC and Nixon campaigned in central Florida in the Orlando area — including Kissimmee, Fla., which is an area that is heavily Puerto Rican, Ocasio-Cortez’s ethnicity.

At the rally, Ocasio-Cortez promised to stand with Nixon, especially from vicious attacks from the right, which means that the squad is still deep. 

The Times reports that Ms. Ocasio-Cortez promised to defend Ms. Nixon against delusional media whores like Laura Loomer, who in August described Nixon as a “ghetto Black communist b*tch,” so that Nixon can remain focused on her campaign. 

“It’s good to be backed by people who are not bought and paid for,” said Nixon at the event. 

Nixon joined the Democratic Socialists of America in June; it makes sense that this former union organizer has one of its most prominent capos riding for her.
