Black Democrats Make History in Gubernatorial Races

Some of the night’s most memorable victories came from Black candidates who broke longstanding barriers in gubernatorial elections.

Keisha Lance Bottoms — Georgia

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms made history by becoming the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history. She also became Georgia’s first female governor, ending a decades-long Republican hold on the state’s top office.

According to NBC News, Bottoms defeated Republican Rick Jackson with approximately 54.31% of the vote to Jackson’s 45.7%, with nearly 99% of precincts reporting in the preliminary results.
