A majority Americans say Trump’s presidency is a failure as he nears one year in office

Just days away from President Trump‘s official one year in office, a majority of Americans think his second term is a bust. According to a CNN poll, 58% of Americans said the president’s administration is a “failure.”

The poll, released on Friday, also finds that 61% of respondents disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy, down slightly from 63% in October 2025. That is significant given that a majority of Americans still say the economy is the country’s top issue.

However, when those who disapprove of Trump’s job performance are asked about the most important reasons why, they list his temperament and behavior (35%), the issue of democracy (25%), and other government policy (25%), including immigration, over the economy (12%).

The president also received failing scores from the American public, who say they disapprove of his handling of health care policy (63%)–the highest since his first term–immigration (58%), foreign affairs (60%), tariffs (62%), and even his overall management of the federal government (60%).

The CNN poll delves even deeper into public opinion among American voters. When asked if they believe the president “cares about people like you,” 66% say that does not apply to Trump. When asked whether Trump can bring the kind of change the country needs, 57% respondents indicated he does not. Additionally, 65% of Americans said they are not proud to have Trump as president.

Trump’s tanking approval ratings are not a good sign for his party, as Republicans are likely to lose control of Congress, which would thwart the rest of his term. If Democrats, who have repeatedly accused the president of breaking federal laws, take back the U.S. House of Representatives and, by a long shot, the U.S. Senate, the Trump administration will almost certainly face a flurry of congressional investigations and subpoenas.

Last week, Trump warned Republicans that if they don’t win elections in November, he will likely be impeached by Democrats.

However, she noted, “He’s not changing his behavior at all [and] he still isn’t gonna give folks healthcare.” Sherman added, “But he definitely is like warning the Republicans to help him.”
