We Have To Talk About Trump’s ‘Trannie’ Attacks On Annie Andrews, Because How Is This Acceptable? [Op-Ed]

Trump supporters will ask rhetorical questions about why “The left” is so prone to ending friendships and relationships with close family members over who they voted for, or, even more erroneously, which party they voted for.
However, Trump supporters don’t get alienated or called bigoted because they’re Republican, or even because they’re conservative. They are who we say they are because they watched a presidential candidate mock a disabled reporter, repeatedly compare migrants to Hannibal Lecter, call them “animals” who are “not human,” spread racist nonsense about Haitian migrants on a presidential debate stage, and consistently say horrible things about and to women, and they said, “Yeah — that’s my guy!”
And now, they listen to him describe the entire Somali nationality as “pirates” and “low-IQ,” make racist remarks about and to Black and brown congresswomen, viciously attack female reporters for asking reasonable questions, root for the destruction of Democratic cities, and obsessively attack his White House predecessors in the most childish ways imaginable — and most of them continue to cheer him on.
These people don’t exist because of President Donald Trump; Trump’s presidency exists because a bigot convinced bigots that they had a friend in the White House in him — no matter how much that fiend put a hurting on their costs of living — and that’s exactly why the president of the United States is so comfortable posting hateful shit like this:
“Annie ‘Trannie’ Andrews is running against our wonderful Darline Graham for the Senate in South Carolina,” Trump posted Monday, referencing Dr. Annie Andrews, the Democratic candidate for Senate in South Carolina, who is not a trans woman.
The sitting president of the United States went on to declare that “Annie Trannie” does not represent South Carolina values, that the “Trannie is not for South Carolina,” and that she’s “in favor of Transgender for Everyone, Open Borders, Defunding the Police, High Taxes, a Weak Military, and will absolutely fight to take your guns away.”
Oh, that’s right: Trump supporters also lose their friends because they’re stupid. And because Trump knows how stupid they are, he knows he can pick random, culture war-related buzzword attacks out of a hat and use them for the cheapest, most obvious displays of fearmongering we’ve seen in generations, and they’ll continue to treat it like it’s MAGA gospel delivered on holy tablets by MAGA Moses.
They’re bigots, and they’re stupid, and that’s why nobody likes them.
In an interview with WYFF News 4, Andrews responded to Trump’s post, saying, “I knew it was coming at some point. I think they want it to be a distraction for me, but it’s not going to be a distraction. I am a disciplined, hard-working candidate who is outhustling and out-fundraising my opponent. That’s why national figures like the President are getting involved. But it doesn’t change why I am running — who I am running for. It doesn’t change the problems South Carolinians are facing. So I am going to stay focused over the next four weeks on that.”
“I’m hearing from voters who are struggling to pay for their groceries, to fill up their gas tank; they are worried about their rural hospitals closing,” she continued. “That’s what I’m worried about, you know, if name-calling could lower gas prices and diesel prices, then call me whatever name you want to call me, but that’s not going to get the job done. I am focused on getting the job done for South Carolinians.”
Her statement didn’t defend trans women, though. To be fair, she also didn’t feel the need to clarify that she is cisgender, but she didn’t call what the president said out as the inconceivably obscene and bigoted hate speech it was.
It’s worth noting that, if her social media feed is any indication, Andrews, who is a pediatrician, has been campaigning largely on affordability, access to healthcare, child advocacy, investing in technology without sacrificing people’s property rights, and bringing down the price of gas — nothing as controversial as defunding the police, taking away guns, and “Transgender for Everyone,” which literally no one is campaigning on or advocating for.
So, Trump is, once again, leaning on bigotry and identity politics in a desperate attempt to give Republicans the edge in the midterms, as Andrews and late Sen. Lindsay Graham’s sister and Senate stand-in, Darline Graham, are neck-and-neck in the polls, despite the fact that South Carolina has not elected a Democratic U.S. senator since 1998.
He’s been doing it for as long as he’s been in office, or even campaigning for office, and now, the president is just flat-out using slurs.
Why would any decent person invite you to Thanksgiving dinner while you support that?
