Whoopi Goldberg Supports Carrie Underwood’s Right to Perform at Trump’s Inauguration Despite Backlash: “I Stand Behind Her”

‘Jesus Take the Wheel’ hitmaker Carrie Underwood drove herself right to the top of headlines Monday (January 13) when she revealed she will be performing at the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump.

Earning a polarizing response for the announcement, some fans – particularly her LGBTQ+ supporters and their allies – slammed the 8x GRAMMY winner for her inclusion in the ceremony, backlash she responded to by doubling down on her support of Trump.

As Country music lovers and more swarmed to social media to debate the impact of Carrie’s performance to her career and more, the hot topic came up on Tuesday’s episode of ‘The View‘ (January 14).

Look inside to see the surprising commentary lent by the daytime talk show’s EGOT-winning hostess Whoopi Goldberg.

While making it clear she does not support Trump nor Underwood for singing at the polarizing president’s inauguration, Goldberg did take an overall liberal stance to the matter.

“People do what they do for whatever reasons,” Goldberg before later sharing, “I stand behind her.”

As a former stand-up comic, Whoopi suggested she understood the blow back that can come with less-than-popular gigs.

“If I believe I have the right to make up my mind to go perform some place, I believe [she has] the same right. I have to support. It doesn’t mean I’m particularly interested in what I won’t be watching, but that’s just me,” the 69-year-old relayed.

Later in the conversation, conservative co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin chimed in to defend Carrie.

“I personally hope we’re moving beyond the era of politics where we want to cancel people’s livelihood because we don’t like their politics,” said Griffin (who previously worked under Trump at the White House). “If you have a problem, you register your complaint by not downloading her songs and not going to her shows. But, I also think from a business standpoint, it’s not a bad decision for Carrie Underwood.
