“Freedom” takes on many forms for P!nk these days.
Beyond feeling like she’s broken free from the criticism of ageist detractors who place limits on what a Pop diva over 40 can look, sound, and perform like, the GRAMMY winner has also loosened the grip of a troubled past that nearly saw her never touch the heights of Billboard charts (or ceilings with her high-flying performances).
As revealed via
Chatting it up with resident interviewer Kara Vaccaro, P!nk (born Alecia Moore) took to CBS’ ‘60 Minutes‘ (in a segment that aired October 22) to dish on everything from her current record-breaking ‘Summer Carnival Stadium Tour‘ to her rise to fame and her troubled past.
In reference to the latter, Moore discussed her humble Pennsylvania upbringing where she got into physical fights with her mother and dealt with years of tension with her father, Jim Moore. That tension made her desperate to leave the city – so much so she engaged in drug use and extensive partying.
“I got into drugs. I was selling drugs. And then I was kicked out of the house. I dropped out of high school. I was off the rails,” she shared candidly in the CBS sitdown. “I was on ecstasy, angel dust, crystal, all kinds of things. And then I was out. Done. Too much.”
The GRAMMY winner credits a near-fatal overdose at a rave on Thanksgiving of 1995 for being what ultimately led her down the road to sobriety.
“And I remember my friend was standing over me, smacking me across the face. And he was like, ‘Get up. You wanna sing, right?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah.’ He’s like, ‘Get on the microphone.’ So I got up and I sang,” Pink said. “And the DJ there took me aside and said, ‘Come back tomorrow, I’ll give you a guest spotlight. But you can never touch drugs again.’ And I never did, haven’t since.”
