In a recent interview on the Dan LeBatard show, Celtics legend Paul Pierce took credit for LeBron James‘ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat back in 2010. Pierce claimed that his reputation of “breaking wills” caused James to seek help in Miami after Pierce’s Celtics team beat him the previous year.
Pierce confidently stated that his Celtics team, though not as skilled as the current roster of the defending NBA champions, knew how to break teams mentally. He emphasized that they would turn games into bar fights, focusing on body blows rather than finesse.
He said;
‘It’s damn close,’ Pierce opened. ‘I ain’t gonna lie, this team is really good. But I will tell you this; our team, we knew how to break teams mentally. So what we lacked in skill versus them, we had with will.’
‘We’re gonna turn it into a bar fight, you know what I’m saying? This ain’t gonna be finesse, this is gonna be body blow, body blow,’ he added.
When asked who he would break mentally on the current team, Pierce named Kevin Garnett and Al Horford. But it was his statement about James that caught the attention of fans and media. Without dropping a name, Pierce hinted that his ability to get players in foul trouble and break their wills may have influenced James’ decision to leave Cleveland for Miami in 2010.
‘Listen, when you start getting guys in foul trouble in the first quarter, I’ve [been] known to break a few wills, you know, sent some of them from Cleveland to Miami,’ Pierce claimed.
It’s important to note that while Zydrunas Ilgauskas followed James from Cleveland to Miami, it is highly unlikely that he is the player Pierce was referring to in his statement.
Celtics legend Paul Pierce is taking credit for LeBron James’ move to the Miami Heat in 2010, claiming that his skill of breaking wills played a role in James’ decision. Whether this claim is true or not is up for debate, but it certainly adds another layer to the rivalry between Pierce and James those days.
