Michael Strahan‘s refusal to cover his heart during the playing of the national anthem has sparked an unexpected and, to be honest, ridiculous controversy this week.
Although there was some social media response at first, things got more heated on Wednesday when a Daily Mail reporter contacted Strahan about the topic outside of his house. The Hall of Fame defensive end seems to seize the reporter’s phone, which was being used to record him, in a video that the publication posted.
Michael Strahan explains his actions during National Anthem
For the first time, Strahan officially addressed the topic in a video that was uploaded to Instagram late Tuesday night. He also acknowledged that he was “not proud of the way I handled that situation” with the reporter, but he insisted that he was taking the necessary steps to “protect” his life and his family.
Regarding his behavior during the playing of the national anthem, which was broadcast on Fox NFL Sunday in observance of Veterans Day from Naval Base San Diego, Strahan maintained that he was not in any way protesting. He said : “Everybody thought, ‘He’s protesting. He’s making a statement,’ which is so far from the truth,” . “I have nothing to protest, I have no statement to be made. The only statement that should be made that I want to make is that I love the military. I’ve always loved the military and I will always love the military. I do so many programs to help veterans and soldiers.”
“I grew up on a military base with a father who was a major in the army. My brother, my sister, my cousins, they all served in the military. I’m a military brat. So the fact of somebody saying that I’m being unpatriotic couldn’t be any further from the truth.”
Strahan explained that he was simply engrossed in the moment and in awe of the sailors in front of him, which is why he did not have his hand over his chest during the national anthem like the other Fox coworkers.
