For months, there have been murmurs that the couple – who have been together since 2016 – quietly went their gone their separate ways recently.
Eagle-eyed Mimi fans noticed that Tanaka – who rose to prominence as a dancer and eventually became the diva’s creative director – was noticeably absent from her ‘Merry Christmas One & All Tour.’
Tanaka was also visibly not present on the songbird’s annual Aspen getaway for the festive season.
Now, amid various reports of a “possible” breakup, Page Six confirms that the couple is indeed no more.
Citing sources close to the situation, it’s claimed that the 14-year age gap between the pair was at the center of the split.
40-year-old Tanaka, who does not have children, reportedly “wants to have a family” while “that’s not where [Carey, 54] is at.” The songbird shares 12-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan with Nick Cannon.
Though notoriously private about her personal life, the chart-topping legend has been vocal about her headspace heading into the holiday season.
Speaking with PEOPLE, the ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ belter said:
“I’ve been looking forward to this Christmas for, like, the whole year. Since last year — because last year wasn’t the greatest.”
Continuing, she added:
“I’m thankful for them all, but it wasn’t my most fun version of Christmas ever” [So I’m going to try and] have fun [this year] come hell or high water.”
With the context of the breakup applied, many are speculating about whether her remarks were about the end of her union with Tanaka.
