Draymond Green is no stranger to controversy, but his tone took a different turn following the Golden State Warriors‘ Game 4 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In a rare display of candor, Green called his own behavior shameful and publicly apologized for missing his postgame media commitments during Game 3.
Green, seated at the podium, said to reporters: “Before we start, I want to apologize to y’all,”
“I didn’t talk the other day. I was quite a bit frustrated.Well, I didn’t want to get myself fined, but more so, say something that would make it sound like an excuse. Yeah.. I didn’t come up here and talk, and I felt like a coward when I got home.”
A dramatic shift from the All-Star forward’s usual bluster, the comment came while the Warriors were in unfamiliar circumstances, behind 3-1 in the series and struggling to stay afloat without Stephen Curry, who is still out due to a Grade 1 hamstring strain.
The events of Games 3 and 4 contributed to Green’s emotional reaction. Following a contentious call on Jaden McDaniels in the last quarter of Game 3, Green fouled out. The Warriors were only two points down at the moment. The Timberwolves won 102-97 in the end without Green.
Only part of the narrative was revealed by his box score from that game, which was two points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals, and five turnovers in 29 minutes. The Timberwolves swiftly took advantage of the gap in the Warriors’ defense created by his absence in the final minutes.
