Nearly a year after shocking footage of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs savagely beating his ex-girlfriend Cassie was unsealed by CNN, the news network has come under attack by the embattled mogul’s legal team on accusations of video tampering.
After first pointing the finger at the federal government for allegedly leaking the brutal clip to CNN, now Diddy’s legal counsel is accusing the news network of altering the 2016 video of his attack of Cassie. What’s more, the legal team allege the original surveillance footage was destroyed.
The unearthed clip of the former couple showed them near the elevator of the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles when Combs chased the singer-actress, grabbed her by the neck, tossed her to the floor, and kicked her before dragging her.
And while the 55-year-old later released an apology video over the harrowing incident, Thursday (March 13) saw his legal team head to a New York court to slam CNN for allegedly tampering with the surveillance footage before publishing it to press.
“All CNN video footage was substantially altered in significant respects,” they said in a letter to Judge Arun Subramanian. “This includes covering the time stamp and then changing the video sequence. It also includes speeding up the video to make it falsely appear that the actions in the video are taking place faster than they are. As a result, the CNN videos do not fairly and accurately depict the events in question.”
Once word of the letter landed on the desk of reps from the network, they issued an official statement.
“CNN never altered the video and did not destroy the original copy of the footage, which was retained by the source,” a spokesperson said. “CNN aired the story about the video several months before Combs was arrested.”
Cassie’s lawyer, Douglas Wigdor, also weighed in on Diddy’s team’s claim – even suggesting it’s just an attempt to have the video discredited and blocked from being viewed by a jury.
“It’s is not surprising that Combs would make a disingenuous argument to exclude the disturbing video from being shown to the jury in the upcoming trial,” Wigdor. “I am confident that the video fairly and accurately represents what happened, will be admitted into evidence, and that Combs will be held accountable for his depravity.”
Diddy’s trial for federal charges related to racketeering, prostitution, and sex trafficking is set for May.
