Chart Check [Hot 100]: The Weeknd Joins Chris Brown As the Only Black Male Singers with Over 50 Top 40 Hits Thanks to ‘Dancing in the Flames’

Thanks to his latest single, ‘Dancing in the Flames,’ Pop superstar The Weeknd has danced right into the Hot 100’s history books.

Details inside.

Scorching the updated all-genre chart as the week’s top-selling song overall thanks to a multi-version EP, ‘Flames’ premiered at #14.

Here are the numbers that powered the placement.

  • Streaming ≈ 15.7 million U.S.-based streams
  • Sales ≈ 18,000 digital downloads
  • Radio Airplay ≈ 19.8 million audience impressions

The lead single from ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow,’ the final installment of the Canadian hitmaker’s (born Abel Tesfaye) trilogy of albums that includes ‘Dawn FM’ (2022) and the blockbuster ‘After Hours‘ (2020), ‘Flames’ also blazed the Hot 100 as the week’s overall top debut – besting the highly anticipated arrivals of new hits like Playboi Carti‘s ‘All Red‘ (#15), Tate McRae‘s ‘It’s Ok I’m Ok’ (#20), and Rod Wave‘s ‘Passport Junkie.’

Coming as the 51st top 40 hit of Tesfaye’s career, he’s now only the second Black male vocalist in the chart’s 66-year history to have over 50 tunes peak in the chart region.

Chris Brown, with 52 top 40 hits, was the first. Among all male vocalists, only Elton John (59) and Elvis Presley (81) have more appearances in the chart region.

The news comes just months after Abel made headlines for joining Brown as the only Black male singers in Hot 100 history to have over 100 placements overall.
