After six years with the team, Woody Johnson, the owner of the New York Jets, decided to remove general manager Joe Douglas on Tuesday. According to a report by Dianna Russini and Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, Johnson has reportedly been more involved in behind-the-scenes activities lately.

According to the story, Johnson had a “contentious” meeting with Jets coaches, including former head coach Robert Saleh, who was sacked a week later, after the team lost to the Denver Broncos 10–9 in Week 4. Johnson aggressively recommended to the coaches during the meeting that Tyrod Taylor be benched in place of Aaron Rodgers because he believed that Rodgers was the primary source of the team’s problems.

In the end, just four games into the season, Jets coaches were able to convince Johnson against making such a snap choice. Rosenblatt and Russini of The Athletic wrote : “The idea of benching the future Hall of Famer sounded so absurd that one coach asked whether the owner was serious—multiple sources from that meeting believed he was,”

Despite Johnson’s unconventional recommendation earlier in the season, Rodgers is still the starting quarterback for New York. On the field, however, the outcomes have not improved. The Jets are 3–8 on the season and 1–5 since interim coach Jeff Ulbrich took over for Saleh, despite having a talented squad on both sides of the ball.

The Jets will need a new head coach and, now, a new general manager since their owner appears to be overly involved in many areas of the company.
